Consensus estimates are a summary of key facts from a variety of Broker Reports.
The facts summarised usually include the following:
- The recommendation
For example a listed company may have had six reports issued about them over the last six months all by different analysts, some with recommendations to buy their stock, some to hold, and some to sell. The Consensus estimates summarise the various reports without going into detail, and give the general consensus e.g. 'buy'.
- The target price
With predictions of where the stock market price for that particular company is headed.
- Estimated earnings
A historical and forward looking estimate of what direction the company is headed in with regard to revenues
You can get consensus estimates from FT.com by going to the company tearsheet, and selecting 'analysis and research'. You can also subscribe to services, one such service is ThomsonReuters Knowledge.
