Local statutory instruments

Local statutory instruments (SIs):

There are two types of local statutory instruments: published and unpublished. Prior to 1947 they were called Statutory Rules and Orders (SR&Os).

Published SIs from 1987 are on the OPSI website with the public general SIs - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi. Both types of local SIs are listed in the official printed issues of SIs and SR&Os.

  • According to OPSI's Freedom of Information Publication Scheme recent unpublished local SIs are obtainable from HMSO for the current and the two previous years and earlier local SIs (from 1922 onwards) can be obtained from The National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 4DU, tel: 020 8876 3444, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm. The National Archives department code and series reference for these Statutory Instruments is TS 37. Quoting this reference in any correspondence will aid your search.

  • The British Library also has a collection of local SIs (from 1922 onwards). The title of the collection is "Statutory instruments [of a local nature]". These can be ordered by finding the record with this title on the Integrated Catalogue and selecting "Request".
