Old DTI material

Older material from the DTI is generally not on the BERR (now BIS) website.

 

Here are the steps you should go through to try to get the material:

 

  • First port of call is the BIS Reports & Publications website (http://www.bis.gov.uk/publications).  If you can't find what you're looking for phone or email the BIS Publications Team (details are on the website but also here: 020 7215 6024 or email: pubs.team@bis.gsi.gov.uk). 

  • Try the British Library and TSO

  • For pre-1994, contact the BIS library as they do hold an archive - the library only makes publications available as a last resort so make sure you've tried the BL, or TSO, first

As a general note, there are other sources of official publications besides the department, e.g. all Command Papers and House of Commons papers should be available through TSO bookshop and later ones may be online on the Official Documents website (http://www.official-documents.gov.uk).

Also try the National Archive UK Government Web Archive http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/webarchive/

Another option is the Wayback Machine - http://www.archive.org/index.php

One of the publications managers at BIS (old DTI) is offering to look into this for me - would someone provide an example?

There are old postings on Lis Law for these. Here are a few of the old DTI stuff people requested but couldn't find:
1984 DTI Command Paper no. 9175 - A Revised Framework for Insolvency Law - checked BERR, Parliament, OPSI - no success (post from 2008)
URN 00/865 "Limited Liability Partnerships: A summary of Responses" [2000] - user tried Publications Unit at DTI but told they don't keep items that old and was not on the website (post from 2008)
DTI 'Independent Company Law Review' [1998] - user tried to order from DTI and checked website but no success. (post from 2006)

nb. I've not checked these against the BL to see if they would have been there

p.s. have found DTI material on the British Library but its not part of its DSC so can't be loaned out...

I was recently asked to find draft clause R of the Company Law Reform Bill issued by the DTI on 19 July 2005. Through the powers of Google I managed to find a link but it didn't work: Company Law Reform Bill - draft clauses to implement the Takeover Directive http://www.dti.gov.uk/cld/pdfs/Takeoversclauses.pdf I tried the "waybackmachine" but this did not work on this occasion. However I was able to trace the doc via the National Archive UK Government Web Archive. http://collections.europarchive.org/tna/20060214184051/http:/www.dti.gov.uk/cld/clauses.htm - this is the parent page from here you can access the explanatory notes to the draft clauses.
