Royal orders

Page history last edited by Anneli Sarkanen 10 years, 5 months ago

Request for a royal order dated October 1935 by which English was instated the official language for studies at Cambridge University, replacing French and Latin, and validating the diplomas granted in that language prior to that date.

  • We had a helpful reply from Cambridge University that an amendment was made to the University Ordinances in November 1935 that stated that PhD dissertations shall be in English, as a French dissertation submitted previously that year was accepted on the basis that there was no formal regulation as to language.

  • The Privy Council website indicates that universities older that 1992 operate under Royal Charters. And therefore if there had been an amendment to the University's Statutes this would have achieved by an Order of Council. The Privy Council have copies of orders on there website from 2000, older ones can be obtained by contacting them directly. Notices of amendments to university statutes (for those established by Royal Chatter) are also published in London Gazette.
