England and Wales: to check if a company is in voluntary winding up, in administration or receivership, in first instance carry out a Companies House search, then contact the Central Registry for Company Winding Up Petitions Tel: 0906 754 0043, opens 10.00am. Premium rate number. Only allows 3 companies to be checked on each phone call.

For UK Bankruptcy searches try the BIS Insolvency Register and the Land Registry.
Scotland: 1. Search the Register of Insolvencies (link to FAQs on Accountant in Bankruptcy site), which is updated once a day; 2. Identify the relevant local court in relation to the company's registered office and ask them to check for any active liquidations or sequestrations.

EU jurisdictions: list of member state insolvency registers on Europa European Justice page (usually local language only but easy to search).
