see the Corpus Iuris Civilis: D stands for Digesta or Digesten and it is actually very easy to find these references if you have the books. The numbering system is to something like Book, title, paragraph, subparagraph.

I noticed this recently in an article: "Digest of Justinian 9.2.51" which was abbreviated to: "D 9.2.51" or also seen as "D 9 2 51 Julian 86 digesta"
